I am a student who received a .dat file that was made by a CR1000. I tried converting it to a CSV file to open it in excel, but the results were less than ideal. Most data was readable but it wasn't very well organized and some garbled data came out. I know that the official software to open the files is netlogger, but I don't own the CR1000 and I also can't afford to pay for a license, since it's only for this one research project. Could you recommend any free software(so not MATLAB) that I could use to view this data properly?

Change the .dat to .csv then open in excel :)
If the data file was created using the CardOut() instruction (TOB3 format) or specified TOB1 as the format, this will result in a binary file which will not parse easily with tools, such as excel which limit themselves to text imports. You would need to use one of the tools such as "File Format Convert" which is provided with LoggerNet to convert these types of files into comma separated formats.
You can use Campbell free software 'PC200W' and open the file with it built in viewr 'View Pro'.
In 'View Pro' there is an 'Excel' format export option, it's in the graph window and not in the main data view window.
1. You start with selecting the paremeters that you want to export.
2. Draw a graph.
3. You need to expend the range of the graph to the whole range of data.
4. open the export window.
5. Select 'Excel' in the 'Data' tab. and save the file
Curt_ingram: i tried that, it garbels some of the data, looses some dots and changes the order of magnitude.

RUWO, if you just need to view the data (plot a graph, zoom in etc') and don't need to do any data analysis then Campbell's 'View Pro' is an excelent tool. you don't need to export and use any other software.
If changing the extension to .csv does not work, that means the file has been edited and is no longer a comma separated file. In that case it may not open in ViewPro. Try opening it in notepad and see if the values are indeed separated by commas.
Once you know what the delimiter is you should be able to open it in excel by specifying the delimiter.
aks: it is still a Comma Separated File, the numbers are still separated by commas. if I look at the file in notepad there is no single value that is over 1000. however, after importing into excel it reads "3.34,3.35,3.366" in the CVS file as: 3.34 3.35 33666 in excel. maybe this something to do with that this is the EU version of excel which normally uses commas instead of dots for decimal separators.
Yes that would be a problem. This becomes an excel question now and you will have better luck seraching on excel forums. You should be able change the decimal seperator in your excel temporarily.
Also, if it is a TOa5 file, skip the excel parser that opens initially. Open it in Excel and you'll have a single column. Delete the first row... that is info about the program, the logger, etc. Then select the first column, and do "Text to Columns" under the "Data" tab.
