  1. How can the age of a sealed rechargeable battery be determined?

    Look for a stamp on top of the battery. The stamp may be in a date format of YYMMDDXX where:

    • YY is the year.
    • MM is the month.
    • DD is the day.
    • XX is the manufacturing plant.

    This indicates the age of the battery.

  2. What type of battery are the 6182 and 17894 (for example, nickel, alkaline, etc.)?

    The 6182 and 17894 are valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) maintenance-free batteries, also known as sealed, lead-acid batteries.

  3. What is involved in replacing the battery of a PS100?

    To replace the battery (pn 6182), follow these steps:

    1. Turn off and disconnect the power to the PS100.
    2. Unlatch and slide off the cover.
    3. Disconnect the battery clip.
    4. Lift out the old battery, and slide in the new battery. 
    5. Reconnect the power, and turn the PS100 on. 
  4. How long does a 6182 or 17894 last after a full charge?

    This depends on the current drain of the system. In general, the battery can be made to last longer by following these steps:

    1. Just before measuring the high-current sensors, slow down the scan interval of the data logger program and switch on the sensors.
    2. Just after the sensors stabilize, take the measurements.
    3. Turn the sensors off immediately.

    Communication can also greatly affect the battery charge. Turn off any communications devices as much as possible to delay the battery discharge. 

    Adding a solar panel and working out a power budget can balance out the charge with the discharge so that the system can be stable indefinitely. For more information, see the “Power Supplies” application note.

  5. Do airlines accept the 6182 on passenger planes as accompanied luggage?

    Check with the airline. Mention that the 6182 is a sealed, valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery.

  6. If a fully charged 6182 or 17894 battery is used without a wall charger or solar panel, how long will the battery continue to supply power to a data logger?
